Speed Metal သည် heavy metal ဂီတ၏မျိုးခွဲဖြစ်ပြီး ၁၉၇၀ နောက်ပိုင်းတွင် New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) မှ စတင်ခဲ့သည်။ Allmusic မှ အလွန်မြန်သော၊ ခက်ထန်ကြမ်းတမ်းသော ဂီတဟု ဖော်ပြထားသည်။ thrash metal ထက်ခက်ထန်ကြမ်းတမ်းမှု လျော့နည်းပြီး melodic သည် hardcore punk လွှမ်းမိုးမှုလျော့နည်းသည်။ မည်သို့ဆိုစေ speed metal သည် traditional heavy metal ထက် မြန်ဆန်ပြီး aggressive ဖြစ်သည်။ solo ပိုင်းတွင် အသားပေးထားသည်။ ထူးခြားချက်မှာ အဆုံးတွင် ကာရန်တူကဗျာတွင် တို၍ အရေးပါသော passges များဖြစ်သည်။ speed metal သီချင်းများသည် မကြာခဏ highly expressive vocal များကို အသုံးပြုထားသည်။ သို့သော် thrash metal သီချင်းထက် harsh vocal အသုံးပြုမှုလျော့နည်းသည်။
